Properties, Puppets, and Mask

Peter Pan - Directed by Angela Hildebrand

There are about 50 versions of the Peter Pan story and this production included a Lion, an Ostrich, and a Kangaroo, besides the threatening Crocodile. Sometimes these minor characters are performed in suits or cut from the show, but instead, it was proposed to turn them into puppets. 

The director wanted each of them to be a unique color and so I leaned into the fantasy element. Each of them also had required different construction techniques. The Ostrich stole the show and the puppeteer won a local special category award for Achievement in Puppetry.  

Much Ado About Nothing - Directed by Marshall B. Garrett

Design Concept:
How would one make Twelve Tiki Masks for a Shakespearean production? Within a day of being asked this question, I accepted the task of crafting these masks for the Hoosier Shakes production of Much Ado about Nothing. I took some of the colors and strong shapes of tiki masks, but had to strip them down and open up the mouths so that the many words could still come out clearly.

These masks held up throughout the whole rehearsal process and four week long runs of outdoor performances in the heat, sun, sweat and weather of an Indiana summer, and are still usable today.

Design Concept:
The God of the old testament is often described as veiled or mysterious, beyond human comprehension or connection. Therefore, the character the Angel of God received a mask to give shape and dimension but retain the veiled nature.

The sacrifice of a ram in Isaac's place was accomplished by a handmade ram "puppet" that was stuffed with a red fabric and animated by Isaac. When the throat was slit it revealed the red fabric which covered the altar and sacrifice and created a "red carpet" that led to the angel and replaced the need for Isaac's blood.
