MANAGEMENT & DIRECTING

Ethan Ruhl as a Stage Manager

As the hubs for communication, from the first rehearsal to the last tear down and every cue between, Stage Managers get to see it all. Each birth, life and death of a show is new and exciting every night in the theater no matter how many times the show has run.

With a production team and cast and crew rounding out to over 60 people, managing this show from start to finish was a wonderful challenge. This fun loving fairy tale takes a turn for the worse in Act 2 as everyone begins to face the consequences of their happily ever after. Every time I interact with this particular story I learn something new. The lessons from this production moved beyond philosophy to practical skills such as: how to clearly call a full musical production, and how to smoothly recover that show when the power cuts out in the opening number.

Working With Ethan

"Ethan was baptized by fire this summer as a stage manager for Hoosier Shakes' inaugural season. He was employed to stage manage our production of Shakespeare's Pericles. He was a quick study, attended to details, and worked tirelessly to create and maintain a professional environment for our cast and crew. Less than one week into our rehearsal process, Ethan was enlisted to take on responsibility for stage managing a second show, Twelfth Night, running in repertory and rehearsing concurrently with Pericles. Most stage managers would have caved under the added stress, but Ethan rose to the occasion and did a stellar job. He was organized and efficient throughout the rehearsal process and performance run. He also served as our tour manager as we performed 15 shows in four separate venues during our three week run. I would not hesitate to work with Ethan in the future in a similar role."
